Men's Tennis Outlast Beacons for 5-4 Win

The Suffolk University Men's tennis team outlasted the UMass Boston Beacons on Thursday evening for a 5-4 victory extending their season opening winning streak to five games.

The Rams won in dramatic fashion as Senior Albert Buruga (Bradenton, Fla.) took the sixth single set with consecutive 6-1 scores to clinch the win for the Rams.

UMass Boston had victory in their grasp in the second singles game before freshman Marc Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) rallied after falling behind 4-0 in his first game to post a 6-4 victory. Winkler then went on to win the second set 6-1 setting up Buruga's match clinching win.

Suffolk, who entered the contest undefeated in doubles play lost their first two matches as  freshman David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) were victorious 8-6 in the opener over Winkler and senior Chris Staley (London, England). Junior Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.) posted the other Beacons tandem win with an 8-2 showing over sophomore Harlan Strader (Marblehead, Mass.) and Albert Buruga.

Sophomore Aaron Lau (Hong Kong, China) and sophomore Drew Reilly (Boston, Mass.) scored Suffolk's lone win in doubles play as they earned an 8-2 victory in the third partners games. Lau was the only Suffolk player on the evening to post multiple victories on the night as he was also a winner in the fourth singles game posting consecutive 6-1 victories.

In the fifth singles game, Strader scored back to back 6-0 wins over sophomore Lyle Analetto (Belmont, Mass.).

Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Norwich University for a 1:00pm match with the Cadets in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
