Men's Tennis Round Out GNAC Regular Season with Win

The Suffolk University Men’s Tennis team completed their 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season schedule with an 8-1 victory over Norwich University to finish with a perfect 4-0 mark on the season. The Rams won all three of their doubles set with ease and picked up five more wins in singles play to top the Cadets as Suffolk pushes their overall season record to 8-0 this spring.

Freshman Harlen Strader (Marblehead, Mass.), the two-time reigning GNAC Rookie of the Week picked up two more victories, one in singles play and one in doubles play for the Rams. Strader was a winner, 6-0, 6-1 in the four position for the Rams to move his regular season record to a perfect 8-0 in singles play. Strader and doubles partner, senior Diego Alvarado (Boston, Mass.) were also victorious in the top doubles match winning 8-1.

Sophomore Chris Staley (London, England) also earned two victories on the day. Staley won both his sets, 6-0 in the second singles match after partnering with junior John Samander (Curacao, Netherlands) for their eighth victory of the season as a tandem. Samander was also victorious in the fifth singles position posting, consecutive 6-2 victories.

Senior Jared Orkin (Newton, Mass.)and junior Justin Ayoub (Brooklyn, Mass.) rounded out singles play for Suffolk as Orkin won his match in the third game, while Ayoub was a winner in the sixth spot. Orkin and Ayoub also partnered for a 8-1 victory in doubles play.

Suffolk’s lone loss came at the hands of the Cadets’ Collin Hyte who topped Alvarado 10-7 in a tiebreaker in the match’s top singles set. Hyte has been flawless himself this season, now pushing his singles record to 7-0.

The Rams will look to defend their 2009 GNAC Championship as they open the league tournament on Thursday evening.
