Men's Tennis Continue to Roll Topping Bears, 9-0

The Suffolk University Men’s Tennis team continued their dominance as they rolled to a 9-0 victory of the Bridgewater State College Bears on Thursday afternoon. Suffolk pushes their season record to a perfect 7-0 with the win, while the Bears fall to 4-4.

Senior Diego Alvarado (Boston, Mass.) was once again a winner in the top singles spot as he beat Matthew Mailhot, 6-3 in consecutive sets for his sixth win of the season in singles play. The reigning GNAC Player of the Week is now 6-1 overall on the season as Suffolk’s top player.

Freshman Harlan Strader (Marblehead, Mass.) remained perfect on the season, pushing his singles record to 7-0 as he was a winner, 6-1, 6-1 in the four position for the Rams over Mike Zagame. Strader, who was named GNAC Rookie of the Week the past two weeks, also partnered with Strader as the duo won their sixth match of the season in doubles play, 8-1.

Sophomore Chris Staley (London, England) earned two victories on the evening for the Rams. Staley was a winner in singles play, defeating Armindo Rocha, 6-0 in their first set, before Rocha retired. Staley and junior John Samander (Curacao, Netherlands) were both victorious in the second doubles position as well as they teamed up for an 8-2 win. Samander continued his perfect run in the five singles position for the Rams, winning 6-1, 6-3 in singles play, as he moves to 7-0 on the season in singles play and 5-0 in that fifth spot.

Senior Jared Orkin (Newton, Mass.) picked up two victories on the evening as well as he won his tiebreak set 10-7 over Adam Laithy in the third singles match. Orkin and junior Nick Pratt (Sutton, Mass.) were also winner in doubles as they picked up an 8-4 victory.

Junior Justin Ayoub (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the field for Suffolk and he was a 10-6 winner in the tiebreaker in the number six position for the Rams completing the sweep over the Bears.

Suffolk will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Norwich University (Vt.) to round out the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season.
