Men’s Soccer’s Bows Out of NCAA Tournament at Conn. College Saturday

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In its first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in over a decade, Suffolk men's soccer dropped its first round match, 4-1, to Connecticut College at Freeman Field Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk had a pair of chances early on, but it would be Connecticut College that found its way on the board first. Matt Scoffone converted a Marco Perguini pass 5:12 into the contest to give the Camels a lead they would never relinquish.   

With just under 13 minutes remaining in the opening half Elliot Spatz padded Conn. College's advantage to a pair. Alessandro Horvath Diano assisted the marker that sent Suffolk into the locker room down 2-0.  

Out of the intermission, Connecticut College poured in two more unanswered goals to stretch the distance to 4-0. Perguini put away an unassisted strike at 52:00, while Jorge Mendo found the back of the net nearly 30 minutes later with no help. 

Erik Van Even managed to eliminate the shutout for the Rams when he tucked away a feed from Brady Sorensen with 5:36 remaining in the contest for the 4-1 final.

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Nathan Harlow had two saves in the setback.
  • Peter Silvester stopped the lone shot he faced in the shutout. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Van Even was responsible for the Rams only goal. 
  • Sorensen supplied Suffolk's one assist. 
  • Connecticut College held the edge in shots, 14-8, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on target. 
  • The Camels took one more corner than the blue-and-gold, 3-2.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk competed in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, first since 2010. 
  • The Rams played Conn. College for the first time. 
  • Van Even scored Suffolk's first-ever NCAA Tournament goal. 
  • The four goals allowed are the fewest by the Rams in a NCAA Championship contest.
