#8 Men’s Soccer Slips at #7 Wentworth, 2-0, in CCC Opening Round

BOSTON – Nathan Gosselin put away two set pieces to lift seventh-seeded Wentworth past eighth-seeded Suffolk, 2-0, Thursday night at Sweeney Field in the Opening Round of the 2021 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 0 | Wentworth 2
RECORDS: Suffolk (8-9-1) | Wentworth (10-9-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wentworth commanded the opening 45 minutes and the 1-0 halftime score proved that, however, the score did not come until the final six minutes. Suffolk was whistled for a foul 15-yards out from its own net, which set up a free kick for Gosselin. Gosselin lifted the ball over a wall of blue-and-gold defenders into the upper right of the twine, just out of reach of Alfredo Serrano Figueroa, to give WIT a one-goal edge.

As more time ticked off the clock, Suffolk saw its back against the wall. The Rams managed to get a pair of shots on frame in the second set of 45 minutes. The first came by Taj Jensen in the 75th minute, but that was turned away by Robbie West. Two minutes later, TJ Maselek's shot was saved by West as well to keep the blue-and-gold off the board.

From there, the Rams were unable to get another shot on net despite all its efforts. Wentworth, meanwhile, capitalized on a yellow card inside the box that set up a penalty kick for Gosselin with 2:50 left in regulation. Gosselin converted the PK and his second goal of the night gave the Leopards a two-goal advantage with just under three minutes left to play.

Wentworth controlled the remainder of the action to walk away with the 2-0 post-season victory.
