Men's Soccer Fall to Lesley 2-0

he Lesley University men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to earn their first victory of the 2014 season with a 2-0 triumph over Suffolk University this afternoon at Edward Field. With the win, the Lynx improve to 1-2-0 while the Rams fall to 0-2 on the young season. The win marks the first under head coach Jim Costa who took over the reins of the Lynx this season.
Lesley junior Walker Panek (Carlsbad, Calif.) recorded the first tally for the Lynx with a rocket of a shot in the 73rd minute. Panek received a feed from freshman Anthony Vitta (Oceanside, N.Y.) on the left side of the box and then powered a curling, right-footed blast into the upper right corner to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead.
Fellow junior Ryan Richardson (Santa Barbara, Calif.) gave the Lynx an insurance goal six minutes later when he found himself in great position for a rebound after a shot from sophomore Erik Johansen (West Harrison, N.Y.) was saved by Suffolk keeper James Potter (North Kingstown, R.I.). Richardson buried the carom for his first goal of the season to give Lesley a 2-0 advantage.
Suffolk nearly found the back of the net with a flurry of chances in the final six minutes of play. Sophomore Ben Daniels (Nantucket, Mass.) had a chance when he dribbled to the middle of the field and fired from 25 yards out, but Lesley keeper Chase Donley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) was there to catch the shot for the save. Suffolk senior Djibril Niang (Dakar, Senegal) threated again when he got his head on a ball in the box in the 89th minute, but again Donley made the save to preserve the shutout.
Lesley outshot Suffolk by a 14-10 margin on the afternoon, including an 11-6 advantage in the second half. The Lynx also held the advantage in corner kicks, finishing with seven while the Rams finished with two attempts.
Donley was credited with four saves to earn his first win of the season while Potter also made four stops for the Rams in the loss.
Lesley will return to Edward Field on Tuesday, September 9th when they welcome Emmanuel College at 8:00p. Suffolk will open their home schedule on Wednesday, September 10th when they will host Tufts University, also at 8:00p.
