Soccer Falls to Tufts 2-1

Box Score

MEDFORD -- Senior *Dan Schoening (Kenmore, WA) *headed in the golden
goal with 4:19 to play in the first overtime period, giving the Tufts
University men's soccer team its first victory of the season with a 2-1
final over Suffolk University on Tuesday night under the lights at Bello
Field.

With Tufts owning all of the momentum in the overtime, junior *Mike
Fitzgerald (Arlington, MA) *drilled a shot on which Suffolk keeper Jack
DeJesus (Swampscott, MA) made an excellent save. However, the ball
bounced to Schoening and he headed it into the goal just below the
crossbar to end it. The goal was the first of the season for Schoening,
and it made amends for a penalty shot that he missed in the first half
and another golden opportunity in overtime on which his shot sailed high
and wide.

Both teams scored within the first three minutes. Tufts jumped out to a
1-0 lead just 1:40 into the match when sophomore *Matt Blumenthal
(Simsbury, CT) *scored on a rebound off the post following a shot by
junior *Ron Coleman (North Haven, CT)*. However, the lead lasted less
than a minute. Suffolk's *Nick Celia (Hanson, MA) *sent a pass over the
top from the midfield that senior *Bernhard Lotterer (Lima, Peru)
*collected and put a low shot past Tonelli at 2:33.

After the quick start, play was scoreless for the next 93 minutes.
However, the action was back and forth all night. Tufts finished with a
17-7 advantage in shots and 9-4 in corner kicks. Tufts senior goalie
*Pat Tonelli (Andover, MA) *made three saves and DeJesus finished with
seven. Both squads had defenders who made saves when the keepers were
out of position.

The Jumbos improve to 1-4-1 overall and Suffolk drops to 4-2-2
