HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk sat in front, 2-1, after the first 20 minutes thanks to back-to-back goals in just over a five-minute span. Montgomery put the Rams on the board 4:50 into the contest with help from Joe Feeney and PJ Donahue. Peter Nugent padded that margin just five minutes thanks to assists from Troy Ladka and Phil Decresce.
Western New England sliced that distance in half at the 13:43 minute mark when Billy Hefferie got the puck past Cal Wilcox. Sam Mitchell and Demitrois Stefanou aided in the goal.
In what appeared to be a scoreless second period, Griffin Clark was sent to the penalty box with 1:44 left before the second intermission. The Golden Bears capitalized on the man-up advantage to level the playing field at 2-all.
Things stayed even until halfway through the third when Montgomery put on the hero hat. The senior put away feeds from Feeney and Samuel Rand to give Suffolk the go-ahead, 3-2.
The Rams staved off the Golden Bears the rest of the way including when WNE plucked Colten Lancaster from in between the pipes for the extra skater boost. Over the final 1:04, Wilcox saved both the shots he faced and Samuel Rand came up with a big block to preserve the victory.
