CHARLESTOWN, Mass. - Freshman Justin Holliday's goal 2:14 into overtime capped a furious comeback and lifted Suffolk to a 4-3 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Becker Friday evening at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink.
The host Rams (7-2-2, 4-1-2 ECAC Northeast) trailed 3-0 heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation, but junior Danyil Medvedev sliced that margin to two just 4:26 into the third period. Freshman Nick Mosher pulled Suffolk to within one with his second tally of the season with 7:40 remaining in regulation, and Medvedev's second of the game (sixth of the campaign) just 55 seconds later evened matters at 3-3. Holliday then provided the golden goal in the extra session for the Rams, as he converted feeds from sophomore Shayne Bailey and freshman Tommy Bishop for his fourth marker of the year.
The visiting Hawks (3-7, 1-5 ECAC Northeast) took control of the contest after a scoreless first period with three goals in the middle stanza, as senior Tyler Auricchio gave Becker the lead with his third tally of the season at the 7:41 mark. Tallies off the sticks of junior Conner Allison and sophomore Corey Sherman in a 90 second span late in the period extended the Hawks' advantage to 3-0 heading into the final frame, setting up Suffolk's rally in the third frame and Holliday's heroics in overtime.
Holliday added an assist to his goal to finish with two points in the triumph for the Rams, who also received a pair of assists each from Bishop and senior Justin Selep, the latter two helpers which set up both of Medvedev's markers. Juniors Gerald Owen, Nicholas McKee and Connor Merrick provided assists in the setback for Becker, which also received a helper off the stick of freshman Corey Schafer.
Senior Brandon Smolarek picked up his sixth win of the season with a 28 save effort in goal for Suffolk, while senior Gregg Hussey made 32 stops between the pipes in the setback for Becker. The Rams outshot the Hawks by a 36-31 margin for the contest, with 18 of those shots coming over the final 22-plus minutes of play.
