Nichols Tops Hockey 3-2 on Saturday
Junior Paul Prescott (Oakdale, Minn.) netted a goal and two assists for three points as Nichols used three second period tallies to notch a 3-2 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Suffolk Saturday evening at Steriti Rink.
The visiting Bison (15-3-2, 7-1-1 ECAC Northeast) trailed by a goal after one period of play before Prescott evened matters just 1:44 into the middle stanza with a power play marker, and Nichols struck twice in the span of a minute late in the period with goals from juniors Sean Fleming (Easthampton, N.J.) and Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) to take a 3-1 cushion into the final 20 minutes of play.  Sophomore Simon Leahy's (Milwaukee, Wis.) goal with 2:41 to play sliced the host Rams' (10-8-1, 4-3-1 ECAC Northeast) deficit to one, but Suffolk could not net the equalizer during the final 48 seconds of play with the extra skater.
Butler added an assist on Prescott's tally to finish with a pair of points on the night for Nichols, which has won four straight and nine of its last 10 outings dating back to January 2nd.  Seniors Mike Schiavone (Chicago, Ill.) and Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.) registered helpers as well for the Bison, who are 9-1-1 overall in the last two calendar months of play.  Sophomore Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) netted Suffolk's opening goal of the evening and joined Leahy with a two-point performance for the hosts, who also received single assists off the sticks of junior Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore Danyil Medvedev (Boston, Mass.).
Junior Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) stopped 27 of 29 shots to pick up his 13th win of the season in goal for Nichols, while junior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) made 26 stops in the setback for Suffolk as each team had 29 shots on goal for the contest.
Suffolk hosts Western New England in an ECAC Northeast outing on Tuesday evening at Steriti Rink that faces off at 7:00 p.m., while Nichols hosts Wentworth in an ECAC Northeast match-up on Wednesday evening in Harrisville, R.I. that faces off at 8:10 p.m.
