Hockey Tops Wesleyan 5-2 As Part of Holiday Tournament

The Suffolk University Hockey team split a pair of contests over the Holiday Break at the Salem State Holiday Tournament.

Sophomore Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) was an All-Tournament selection as he scored a goal in each of the contests while also adding an assist in Saturday's 5-2 victory over Wesleyan College to finish with three points on the weekend.

After a 4-1 setback to the host Vikings on Friday evening, Suffolk rebounded with a 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Five players registered goals in the win for Suffolk who improve to an 8-2-1 overall record on the 2014-15 campaign.

Trailing 1-0 after one period of play, Suffolk would strike for three goals in the second including a pair on the power-play.

Senior Tim Sprague (Plymouth, Mass.) would open the scoring four minutes into the period as he took assists from sophomore Justin Selep (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Creg Cook (South Lancaster, Mass.) to make it a 1-1 contest.

Turner would net his team leading ninth goal of the season at the 7:49 marker in the period on the power-play when he took helpers from junior Tyler Heineman (Randolph, N.J.) and sophomore Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, Wis.).

The trio would add another goal later in the period as Leahy knocked in his first tally of the year with the assists coming from Heineman and Turner to make it a 3-1 lead with four minutes remaining in the period.

Selep would score his seventh goal of the year four minutes into the third period, before junior Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) capped off the scoring with Suffolk's fifth straight goal of the contest.

Junior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) made 33 saves in goal to earn the victory for Suffolk.

Suffolk will be back in action on Thursday evening when they travel to Stonehill College for a non-league game with the Skyhawks at 7:00pm.
