Hockey Tops Salve Regina 3-2 On Saturday

The Suffolk University Hockey team won their second straight game to start the 2014-15 season with a 3-2 victory over Salve Regina University in ECAC Northeast Action on Saturday evening.

Sophomore Danyil Medvedev (Boston, Mass.) scored the game winner with 4:36 remaining in regulation as Suffolk scored a pair of goals in the third period to erase a one goal deficit in their home opener at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink in Charlestown.

Junior Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) pushed aside 41 shots in goal for Suffolk to help lead the Rams to victory.

Salve struck quick in the opening minute of the game as sophomore Jonathan Felteau (Peabody, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season just sixty-eight seconds into the contest.

Suffolk would answer later in the first period when freshman Jack Jenkins (Billerica, Mass.) put home feeds from juniors Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) and Connor McCarthy (Hanover, Mass.).

Salve would dominate the majority of the second period outshooting Suffolk by a 21-6 margin and scored the lone goal of the period when junior Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) connected on a power-play at the 14:20 mark.

Suffolk would get tagged for 10 penalties in the middle period. Their special teams would be a major contributor to the victory as they held Salve to just 1 of 10 scoring on the power-play, including a pair of 5-on-3's in the contest.

Sophomore Justin Selep (Pittsburgh, Pa.) would even the game when he scored his second tally of the year nine and a half minutes into the period. Selep's goal would be Suffolk's second of the evening on the power-play with the assist coming from Cherpak, his second of the night.

Selep had a chance to knock in the game winner when nearly six minutes remaining in the third as he picked up a loose puck in Salve's zone as junior goaltender David Chiozadze (Langhorne, Pa.) found himself out in no man's land but the Rams could not convert.

Salve also missed a chance to go ahead with five minutes in the period as sophomore Evan Schultz (Durham, N.H.) missed an opportunity in front of the net that clanged off the crossbar.

Salve held a 43-24 edge in shots in the contest. The loss drops them to a 0-1-2 mark to start the season as Saturday's game was their first conference action of the season as well.

Both teams will be back in ECAC Northeast action on Thursday evening.

Salve Regina will Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:05pm.

Suffolk will travel to Johnson & Wales University for a 7:45pm faceoff with the Wildcats.
