The Suffolk University Hockey team garnered five postseason awards from the ECAC Northeast Hockey conference for their 2013-14 season. Freshman Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, Wis./Northern Cyclones (EHL)) was named Rookie of the Year as well as being named to the All-Rookie team. A pair of seniors; Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass./Bay State (EJHL)) and Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Pa./Springfield (EJHL)) were tabbed as second team All-Conference selections. Sophomore Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich./Capital District (EJHL)) was named to the league's honorable mention team at goaltender.
Leahy finished the season tied for the team lead with 19 points as he scored nine goals and also registered 10 assists on the year. He was second among freshman scorers in the ECAC Northeast Hockey conference, while leading the league with 13 points in-conference action, also a team-high.
McGinnis finishes his senior season with 19 points as he led Suffolk with 10 goals on the year and also added nine assists. McGinnis was just one of 11 players in the league to register a double digit total in goals scored on the season. The Suffolk captain registered 13 points on the season in 14 conference games. The senior forward wraps up a four-year career that saw him score 37 goals in 85 games played. He also added 37 career assists, the most of any Rams' forward in the past six seasons.
Stauffer was one of two Suffolk players to record 10 assists on the season, as he finished second in the ECAC Northeast among defensemen in helpers. One of two Suffolk captains on the season, Stauffer appeared in all 25 games for the Rams. Stauffer logged 98 career games on the Suffolk blueline as he registered 50 points (13 goals, 37 assists). During his freshman season, Stauffer helped make history as Suffolk tied an NCAA Division-III record scoring eight power-play goals in a game against Salve Regina University on November 18, 2010. That evening Stauffer became just the 34th player ever to register a hat trick strictly with the extra-man advantage.
Smolarek registered a 3.37 goals against average in 18 games played on the season. Smolarek held ECAC Northeast opponents to 2.33 goals a game while stopping 93.7-percent of the shots he faced in 10 conference games on the season as he posted a 6-3-1 in league action. Smolarek was named ECAC Northeast Goalie of the Week in the Rams' final week of the regular season as his 30-save shutout of Wentworth helped Suffolk clinch their first playoff appearance in three seasons. Smolarek is 11-14-1 in goal for the Rams through his first two seasons with a 3.40 goals against average and a .906 save percentage.
Suffolk finished the 2013-14 season with a 9-15-1 overall record. The Rams were the number five seed in the ECAC Northeast Playoffs as they posted a 6-7-1 conference record.
