McGinnis, Smolarek Take ECAC Northeast Honors

Two Suffolk University Hockey players earned recognition by the ECAC Northeast Hockey Conference for their play in the final week of the 2013-14 regular season.

Senior Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass/Bay State (EJHL)) was named a Co-Player of the Week as he registered multi-point efforts in both of Suffolk's victories on the week. McGinnis had a goal and an assist in each of the two wins, a 4-2 victory over Becker on Wednesday and a 4-0 shutout over Wentworth on Saturday. McGinnis concludes the regular season as the Rams' top point getter with 19 on the season on a team-high 10 goals and nine assists. The senior forward is rounding out an impressive career at Suffolk as he has scored 37 goals and added 37 assists for a total of 74 points in 84 career games played.

Sophomore Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) posted his first career shutout on Saturday stopping all 30 shots he faced against Wentworth. Smolarek made a total of 107 saves in the three games last week including a 39-save effort in the victory over Becker.  He has been one of the league's top netminders, particularly in conference action. In 10 conference games, Smolarek has a 6-3-1 record with a 2.33 goals against average while stopping 93.7-percent of the shots he has faced.

The Rams will be headed to the ECAC Northeast playoffs on Saturday as they will travel to Johnson & Wales University. The Rams finished with the number five seed positing a 6-7-1 conference record (9-14-1 overall). Faceoff for Saturday's quarterfinal will be at 5:30pm.
