Trio of Winter Sport Athletes Garner Conference Nods

Three Suffolk University winter sport athletes earned conference nods this week by their respective sport conferences on Monday February 10.

A pair of Suffolk University Hockey players earned honors by the ECAC Northeast conference. Freshman Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) was named Rookie of the Week, while sophomore goalie Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) earned selection to the weekly honor roll.

Turner netted two goals and added an assist in a pair of games last week for the Rams. He scored Suffolk's first goal in a 5-2 victory over Salve Regina last Tuesday evening at Steriti Rink in the North End and capped off his multi-point evening with an assist later in the contest. Turner also found the back of the net in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Nichols College scoring his sixth goal of the season. The freshman forward currently leads the Rams this season with two game winning goals and is sixth among first year players in the league with 11 total points.

Smolarek put together a 44-save performance in Tuesday's victory between the pipes for Suffolk. The sophomore netminder improved his season record to 5-7-1 on the year. He is currently third in the league with a .924 save percentage in conference games.

Senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) earned her second consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Weekly Honor Roll selection. Ruys averaged 20 points over a three game span last week that included a pair of conference victories for Suffolk. Ruys posted double-doubles in two of those games, including a 19 point - 10 rebound performance in a 61-57 double overtime victory over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday. Ruys had another big evening on Tuesday as she scored 28 points and collected 10 rebounds in a 74-71 setback to UMass Boston. She also added 13 points in the Rams' 67-34 conference win at Mount Ida on Thursday. Ruys continues to climb her way up the all-time scoring ranks in Suffolk University history as she became just one of three players to surpass 1,400 career points on Saturday (1,401 total).

It will be a busy week of action for all three teams this upcoming week.

Men's Basketball will host Mount Ida College on Tuesday and Lasell College on Thursday at the Regan Gymnasium. Tip-offs for both games will be at 7:30pm.

Women's Basketball travels to Middlebury College on Tuesday at 5:30pm before they welcome Mass. College of Liberal Arts to the Regan Gymnasium on Thursday evening for a 5:30pm tip-off.

Hockey will be idle until Thursday evening when they travel to Western New England University at 7:10pm. They'll host Curry College on Saturday afternoon at Steriti Rink in the North End. Faceoff is scheduled for 4:40pm.
