HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Sophomore Sean Fleming (Easthampton, N.J.) recorded a goal and three assists to help the Nichols College men's ice hockey team double-up Suffolk University 6-3 in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast action Saturday night at Levy Rink.
Senior captain Greg Strootman (Aston, Pa.) picked up a pair of goals and now has six in his last four games as the Bison (14-5-2, 7-2-1 ECAC Northeast) won for the fifth time in their last six outings. Junior Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) picked up a pair of apples as 11 different student-athletes recorded at least one point for Nichols.
Sophomore David Lazaro (Canton, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist for the Rams (6-13-1, 3-6-1 ECAC Northeast) while junior Dan Mazzei (Tewksbury, Mass.) racked up two assists. Freshman Kevin Venturoso (Franklin, Mass.) finished his night with 45 saves.
Strootman opened the scoring at 9:28 of the first with a wrist shot that beat Venturoso over the blocker. Freshman Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) evened the score at one at 10:53 with a great individual effort, and junior Tim Benedetto (Peabody, Mass.) gave the Rams a 2-1 lead with his third goal of the campaign 24 seconds later. Nichols evened the score at two 60 seconds after Benedetto's marker when junior Chris Gularte (Salinas, Calif.) snuck a slap shot from the right point through a screen and past Venturoso.
The Bison then reeled off four-straight goals – one in the second and three in the third – to move ahead 6-2. Junior Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio) one-timed a pass from the right circle on the PP at 15:22 of the second put Nichols ahead 3-2. In the third, Fleming beat Venturoso with a wrist shot from the slot that rang off the right post and in at 8:53 before Strootman one-timed a feed from Fleming at 12:48 to push the lead to 5-2. Senior Rick Batenburg (Denver, Colo.) then redirected a shot by freshman Rob Belger (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) from the right point past Venturoso at 16:20 to close the scoring for Nichols. Lazaro's second marker of the season 30 seconds accounted for the final score.
"I thought we played great for the first 10 minutes before Suffolk bounced back," said Nichols second-year head coach Kevin Swallow. "We picked up our play in the second period. We had more consistent shifts and guys started playing better defensively. The third period was our strongest, which bolds well for us down the stretch."
Nichols went 1-for-1 with the extra attacked and killed off both Suffolk power-play opportunities. Sophomore Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) finished with 34 saves to improve to 11-5-2.
The Bison return to action on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Wentworth at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. Suffolk travels to Western New England on Thursday for a 7:10 p.m. game.
