Wildcats Clip Hockey In OT, 4-3
Freshman Drew Kariofiles (Cincinnati, Ohio) netted the game-winner 1:59 into overtime to lift Johnson & Wales to a 4-3 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Suffolk Saturday afternoon at Steriti Rink.
Kariofiles converted a feed from sophomore Aaron Arm (Plantation, Fla.) and broke in alone during a 4-on-4 opportunity to collect the deciding tally for the visiting Wildcats (15-4, 5-3 ECAC Northeast), who jumped out to a 3-0 advantage midway through the contest on a pair of goals off the stick of freshman Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) that sandwiched a marker from Michael Mazzotta (Mars, Pa.).  Sophomore Carmen Mastrangelo's (Wellington, Fla.) power play goal with 1:17 remaining in the second period enabled the host Rams (5-12-1, 2-5-1 ECAC Northeast) to close back to within two entering the final 20 minutes of regulation, and Suffolk evened matters with a pair of third period tallies off the sticks of sophomore Mike Pantano (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.), with the latter coming on the power play with 3:39 remaining in regulation.  Johnson & Wales enjoyed a brief power play in the early stages of the overtime period before Kariofiles provided the heroics for the Wildcats in the extra session.
Sophomore Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.) collected a pair of assists in the win for Johnson & Wales, which also received a single helper off the stick of senior Eddie Patterson (Cinnaminson, N.J.).  Senior Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Pa.), juniors Andrew Ball (Brick, N.J.) and Tim Sprague (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore David Lazaro (Canton, Mass.) recorded assists in the setback for Suffolk, which scored a pair of man-advantage markers on nine attempts for the contest.
Freshman Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) picked up the win in goal for the Wildcats with a 29-save effort, while freshman Kevin Venturoso (Franklin, Mass.) also made 29 stops in the setback for the Rams as Johnson & Wales outshot Suffolk by a 33-32 margin on the afternoon.
Suffolk hosts Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast outing on Tuesday evening at Steriti Rink that faces off at 8:40 p.m., while Johnson & Wales travels to Lowell, Mass. on Tuesday evening to square off with Wentworth in an ECAC Northeast match-up at the Tsongas Center that begins at 7:30 p.m.
