Hockey Skates to 4-1 Victory At Franklin Pierce

The Suffolk University Hockey team was victorious 4-1 over Franklin Pierce University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Tim Sprague (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) each tallied a goal and an assist to lift Suffolk to a 4-5-1 overall record heading into the holiday break.

Franklin Pierce got on the board first midway through the opening period when Roman Malyshev tallied his first goal of the season on a one-timer from the left circle.

From there all the offense would go all Suffolk's way as they scored four times unanswered.

Junior Dan Mazzei (Tewksbury, Mass.) would answer the Ravens' goal a minute later as Suffolk took advantage of the power-play. Mazzei tallied his third goal of the season with feeds from Cherpak and Sprague to even things up.

Freshman Stanton Turner (San Francisco, Calif.) would score what would be the game-winning goal just forty-eight seconds into the second period on a shorthanded tally. Turner forced a turnover at the blueline and rushed in all lone deking past Ravens' goalie Dave O'Brien for the 2-1 edge.

Cherpak would add Suffolk's second goal of the period at the 4:29 mark when he converted feeds from junior Tim Benedetto (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore David Lazaro (Canton, Mass.). Sprague would tack on an insurance goal with four minutes remaining in regulation in the third period as Suffolk once again took advantage with the extra-man. Sprague knocked in his sixth goal of the season as he pushed in a rebound off a shot by senior Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.).

Sophomore Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mich.) made 23 saves in goal for the Rams.

Suffolk held a 34-24 edge in shots in the contest.

Suffolk will be idle now until January 4th when they take part in the Cod Fish Bowl hosted by UMass-Boston. It will be Suffolk's first appearance in the local four-team tournament since the 2009-10 season in which they were victrious. Suffolk will take on the host Beacons in the opener at 1:00pm.
