Freshman Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, Wis.) netted a pair of goals and an assist to lead Suffolk to a 7-1 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Nichols Wednesday evening at the Charlestown Ice Rink. 

The host Rams (3-2, 2-2 ECAC Northeast) used a four-goal outburst in the opening period, including a pair of tallies off the stick of sophomore Tyler Murray (Houston, Tex.) and a 5-on-3 power play goal from Leahy, to take control of the contest after 20 minutes of action, and junior Dan Mazzei (Tewksbury, Mass.) extended that margin to 5-0 just 5:31 into the middle frame.  The visiting Bison (3-1-1, 2-1-1 ECAC Northeast) collected what would prove to be their lone marker of the contest midway through the second period on junior Kyle Shapiro's (Ambler, Pa.) 5-on-3 man-advantage marker that was set up by sophomore Paul Prescott (Oakdale, Minn.), but a pair of goals in the final 7:09 of play off the sticks of Leahy and sophomore Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) (the latter coming on the power play) closed out Suffolk's scoring and accounted for the final margin. 

Senior Jon Stauffer (Lansdale, Pa.) added three assists in the triumph for the Rams, who also received a goal from junior Tim Benedetto (Peabody, Mass.) as well as a pair of helpers off the stick of sophomore Mike Pantano (Bridgewater, Mass.).  Senior Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.), along with sophomores Shaughn Shields (Woodbridge, Va.) and Connor McCarthy (Hanover, Mass.), also notched assists on the night for the hosts, which also received a single helper from freshman Connor Lawrence (White Plains, N.Y.).

Sophomore Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mo.) picked up the win in goal for Suffolk by stopping 33 of 34 shots, while sophomore Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.), who entered the night with a 1.71 GAA in four previous starts, made 12 first period saves in suffering the setback for Nichols, who received eight stops over the final 40 minutes of action from sophomore Patrick Salkind (Springfield, Va.).  The Bison outshot the Rams by a 34-28 margin for the contest, but the visitors saw their season-opening string of 19 straight penalty kills end with Leahy's first period conversion.

Suffolk heads to Marlboro, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Becker in an ECAC Northeast outing that faces off at 5:40 p.m., while Nichols travels to Pawtucket, R.I. on Saturday evening to square off with Johnson & Wales in an ECAC Northeast clash that faces off at 7:10 p.m.
