
he Johnson & Wales University hockey team posted a 3-1 victory against Suffolk in an ECAC Northeast contest at Lynch Arena on Thursday evening.
Johnson & Wales got on the board first when junior Jason Healey (Goshen, N.Y.) fired in shot after a pass from freshman Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) and sophomore Patrick Avery (Carmel, Ind.) just 3:46 into the contest. The Wildcats added to their lead at the 7:43 mark when a 5-on-3 goal by sophomore Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.) with assists to freshman Stefan Brucato (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and fellow rookie Matt Lanzillotti (Chicago, Ill.) to make the score 2-0. The Wildcats took the two goal lead into the locker room after the first period of play with a 14-9 advantage in shots.
The Wildcats extended their advantage just 3:19 into the second stanza after Healey's second goal of the game, again with assists to Brouillard and Avery, made the score 3-0. JWU dominated the play for the period and held a 16-8 advantage in shots for the second period. The Wildcats had the three goal lead after two periods of play.
Suffolk cut into the lead at the 7:34 mark of the third stanza when junior Drew Mazzei (Tewksbury, Mass.) put in a rebounded shot from sophomore Shaughn Shields (Woodbridge, Va.), making the score 3-1. That would be all the scoring for the evening, however as JWU held on for the 3-1 victory.
Freshman Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) recorded 26 saves for Johnson & Wales in the victory while junior Brett Roman (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) had 35 stops in the setback for the Rams.
With the victory the Wildcats remain unbeaten at 3-0 with a 2-0 record in the ECAC Northeast while Suffolk falls to 1-2 on the year with an 0-2 mark in league play. The team will return to action on Saturday, November 16th when they travel to Curry for an ECAC Northeast Contest at 4:40 p.m
