Hockey Falls to Becker 5-4

Junior forward Dan Kane (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a hat trick to power host Becker College to a 5-4 victory over visiting Suffolk University in ECAC Northeast men's ice hockey action Saturday evening at the New England Sports Complex. The Ice Hawks of Becker are now 10-8-1 and 1-6-1 against conference opponents while the Rams of Suffolk fall to 6-8-4 with a 3-3-2 ECAC record.

After Becker senior forward Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) started the scoring 12:15 into the game, Kane would go off, scoring the next three goals as the Ice Hawks went up 4-0. Ahead 4-1 entering the third period, Becker held off a furious Suffolk rally, with freshman forward Tyler Auricchio (Henderson, Nev.) providing the eventual game winner with seven minutes to play. Junior forward Korby Anderson (Owantonna, Minn.) had three assists on the night, while senior defenseman Don Kane (Staten Island, N.Y.), brother of Dan, had two. Dan Kane assisted on Auricchio's game-winner. Junior goalie Shaun Millerick (Hampton, N.H.) finished the night with 23 saves.
The Rams never let up despite falling behind 4-0, with all four goals coming from different players. Sophomore forward Dan Mazzei (Tewksbury, Mass.), junior forward Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.), freshman forward Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore forward Richard Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) each found the back of the net, and it was all the Ice Hawks could do to hold on for the final 2:23 of the game after Cherpak's goal pulled them to within one score. Freshman goalie Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mo.) had 26 saves.
Up next for the Ice Hawks, Becker travels to Western New England University to face the Golden Bears on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Suffolk hosts the Jumbos of Tufts University on Tuesday with the puck dropping at 7:25 p.m.
