Brandon Smolarek Tabbed ECAC Northeast Goalie of the Week

Suffolk University freshman goaltender Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mo.) was named ECAC Northeast Hockey Goalie of the Week on January 15. It is the second time this season Smolarek has taken home the conference's weekly honor for netminders during the 2012-13 season. Smolarek helped the Rams to a 1-0-1 record last week as he pushed aside 59 of the 60 shots he faced in two games.

Smolarek made 41 saves on Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 Rams' victory over SUNY-Brockport. He came in for a relief effort on Tuesday in a 4-4 tie with Franlin Pierce University. Trailing four goals Smolarek was called into the game and stopped all 18 shots he faced in two and a half periods of action to help lift the Rams to a 4-4 tie with the Ravens.

On the season now Smolarek has a 2-2-3 record with a 3.12 goals against average and a save percentage of 91.2-percent. His save percentage is the second best total among ECAC Northeast goaltenders, while he is ranked seventh in the league in goals against.

Smolarek was not the only Ram to earn honors this week as freshman Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) was tabbed to the Weekly Honor Roll. Cherpak had two key goals last week for the Rams. He scored the game-tying goal in Tuesday night's draw with Franklin Pierce as the freshman forward tallied his seventh goal of the year with ninety-five seconds remaining in regulation. Cherpak would also score the eventual game-winner on Saturday as now boasts 10 points in 14 games for the Rams (8 goals – 2 assists). His four power-play tallies lead the team while he has a pair of game winning goals on the year.
