Hockey Falters In Non-Conference Setback to Franklin Pierce

Junior Tom Mills' (Oxford, England) goal 1:58 into overtime lifted Franklin Pierce to a 4-3 non-league college ice hockey victory over Suffolk Tuesday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.

The visiting Ravens (2-8-3) trailed 3-1 entering the final 20 minutes of action, but junior Michael Carr's (South Boston, Mass.) power play goal 3:58 into the third stanza sliced that margin to one before fellow junior Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) evened matters with 5:26 to play in regulation to set up the deciding tally by Mills, who converted a feed from sophomore Kyle Craig (Quincy, Mass.) on the deciding marker in the extra session.

Sophomore Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) staked the host Rams (2-10) to a 2-0 first period advantage with a pair of goals (including a power play tally) in just over a six minute span, but sophomore Brandon Dennis (Williamsport, Md.) sliced Franklin Pierce's deficit in half with a goal that came with 2:06 remaining in the opening 20 minutes of play.  Sophomore Ryan DesRoches (Salem, N.H.) extended Suffolk's lead to 3-1 with a marker that came with 3:01 to play in the second stanza, setting up the Ravens' third period comeback and Mills' heroics.

Dennis and Sweeney each added an assist to go with their goals in the triumph for Franklin Pierce, which also received a pair of helpers from sophomore Andrew Dadds (Mount Ephraim, N.J.) as well as single assists off the sticks of junior Dino Federico (Canton, Mass.) and freshman Tim Sullivan (Rye, N.H.).  Sophomore Josh Goryl (Rochester, Mich.) provided helpers on both of McGinnis's markers in the setback for Suffolk, which also received single assists off the sticks of sophomore Jon Stauffer (Lansdale, Pa.) and freshmen Creg Cook (South Lancaster, Mass.) and Dan Mazzei (Tewksbury, Mass.).

Senior Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Franklin Pierce with a 23-save effort, while sophomore Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) made 25 stops in the setback for Suffolk as the Ravens outshot the Rams by a 29-26 margin for the contest.

Suffolk travels to Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Assumption in a non-league outing that faces off at 4:35 p.m., while Franklin Pierce heads to Hooksett, N.H. on Saturday evening to take on Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up that faces off at 7:30 p.m.
