Senior Payden Benning (Estevan, Sask.) netted a pair of goals to lead Curry to a 5-1 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Suffolk Saturday afternoon at Steriti Rink.
The visiting Colonels (6-1, 5-0 ECAC Northeast) jumped out to a 3-0 advantage just 13:47 into the contest en route to their sixth straight triumph, as freshman Jordan Reed (Ajax, Ont.) staked Curry to a 1-0 lead 4:42 into play before junior Ian DeLong (Kutztown, Pa.) extended that margin to 2-0 at the 10:35 mark. Benning's shorthanded tally with 6:13 remaining in the opening stanza gave the visitors their early three goal advantage, but freshman Tim Sprague (Plymouth, Mass.) cut the host Rams' (2-7, 0-4 ECAC Northeast) deficit to two with his first collegiate goal, a power play marker that came with 5:49 to play in the first period. Benning's second goal of the contest, an unassisted tally 3:16 into the middle stanza, extended Curry's lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes of play, and senior Ryan Barlock's (Chicago, Ill.) marker with 2:57 to play in the contest accounted for the final score.
DeLong added an assist on Reed's goal to finish with two points in the triumph for Curry, which also received single heloers off the sticks of juniors Brett Kaneshiro (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), George Isham (Chicago, Ill.) and Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alta.), sophomore Joshua Pinero (Huntington, Calif.) and freshman Robert Kleiman (DeWitt, Mich.). Freshman Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for the Colonels by stopping 21 of 22 shots on the day, while sophomore Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) made 43 stops in net in the setback for Suffolk as Curry outshot the Rams by a 48-22 margin for the contest.
Suffolk hosts Stonehill in a non-league outing next Saturday evening in Everett, Mass. beginning at 8:35 p.m., while Curry heads to Babson Park, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Babson in a non-league contest that faces off at 7:00 p.m.
