Hockey Duo Honored by ECAC Northeast

The Suffolk University Hockey team opened the 2011-12 season by taking the Becker College IceBreaker Tournament and in doing so had two players honored by the ECAC Northeast Hockey Division.

Sophomore Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) was named Goalie of the Week. Kelley stopped 48 of 50 shots in the two-game tournament as the Rams start the new season with a 2-0 record. Kelley made 29 saves in the championship game as the Rams topped the host Hawks by a 4-1 score. Kelley made 19 saves in Friday's play-in game as the Rams topped Assumption College 3-1 to open the season. For his efforts the Suffolk netminder was also named the IceBreaker Tournament MVP.

Freshman Scott Mathieu (Taunton, Mass.) was named Rookie of the Week. The freshman defenseman scored the game winner on Saturday as his first career collegiate goal proved to be the deciding goal in the Rams win over Becker. Mathieu's goal came thirteen minutes into the second period on a Rams power play as Suffolk were 4-1 victors over the host Hawks.

Suffolk will be back in tournament action this week as they travel to Worcester State University for the Pepperidge Farms Classic. The Rams will skate on Thursday against the host Lancers at 4:30pm.
