Hockey Claims Becker College IceBreaker Tournament

The Suffolk University Men's Hockey team captured the 2011 Becker College IceBreaker Tournament Championship with a 4-1 victory over the host Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

Suffolk scored a pair of goals in each of the second and third periods as they open the 2011-12 season with wins in their first two contests.

Sophomore goaltender Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) took home tournament MVP honors as he posted 29 saves in the championship game. Kelley stopped 19 shots in Friday's 3-1 victory over Assumption College.

Freshman Scott Mathieu (Taunton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal thirteen minutes into the second period for his first collegiate career goal. Mathieu converted on a Suffolk powerplay as he took feeds from sophomore Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Pa.) and sophomore Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.).

Freshman Andrew Ball (Brick, N.J.) scored the first goal of the game seven minutes into the second period after a scoreless first period.

Becker would get on the board with four minutes remaining in the second period as they took advantage of a power-play of their own as Mark Lolito (Staten Island, N.Y.) cut the Rams lead in half at 2-1.

Suffolk added two goals in the third with McGinnis scoring an even-strength goal six minutes into the final period as he took feeds from sophomore Andrew Flynn (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomore Josh Goryl (Rochester, Mich.).

Senior Joe Greene (Weymouth, Mass.) would cap the game with four seconds left as he put in an empty net goal to seal the Rams victory.

Suffolk will be back in tournament action later this week as they will participate in Worcester State University's Pepperidge Farm Classic. The Rams will take on the Lancers on Thursday at 4:30pm.
