Hockey Team Opens New Season with 3-1 Win

The Suffolk University Hockey team opened the 2011-12 season with a come from behind victory over Assumption College in the first game of the Becker College Ice Breaker Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Rams scored three unanswered goals in the third period to top the Ice Dogs.

Assumption's Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass.) got the scoring started seven minutes into the second period, finding the back of the net on an assist by Kevin Glanzman (Massapequa, N.Y.) in the last second of an Ice Dog power play.

The Rams scored the equalizer 6:14 into the third period when Jon Stauffer (Lansdale, Pa.) fired home a blast from just inside the blue line to tie the game at 1-1, with assists to Josh Goryl (Rochester, Mich.) and Nate Linard (Brighton, Mich.).

Then with 4:41 left in the game, Suffolk's Ryan DesRoches (Salem, N.H.) scored the eventual game-winner on a fast break mere seconds after a Rams' timeout to put Suffolk up 2-1. The goal was assisted by Robert Donahue (W. Bridgewater, Mass.) and Chris Rettig (Raynham, Mass.).

With 1:29 left, Suffolk's Andrew Flynn (Stamford, Conn.) scored the insurance goal for the Rams, assisted by Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) and Goryl.

The game was physical throughout, with a total of twenty penalties whistled. Suffolk outshot Assumption, 35-20.

Suffolk goalkeeper Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) had 19 saves in the victory, while Assumption goalkeeper Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla.) had 32 stops.

Suffolk will play in Saturday's tournament championship game at 1:50pm while Assumption will take the ice in the consolation game at 2:30pm. Their respective opponents will be decided in game two of the tournament Friday evening between the Skyhawks of Stonehill and the host Ice Hawks of Becker.
