Hockey Tops Salve Regina 5-1

Sophomore Andrew Flynn (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) each notched a goal and an assist to lead Suffolk to a 5-1 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Salve Regina Monday evening at Steriti Rink.

After the two teams traded scores in the opening period of play, the host Rams (8-14, 4-8 ECAC Northeast) took control of the contest with three goals in less than four minutes late in the middle stanza, as senior Paul Weisser's (Longmeadow, Mass.) power play marker with 6:30 remaining in the frame gave Suffolk the lead for good.  McGinnis and fellow freshman Jon Stauffer (Lansdale, Pa.) each tallied in a 1:05 span to give the hosts a 4-1 cushion after 40 minutes of action, as Flynn's power play goal just over the midway point of the third period closed out the scoring for the contest.

Stauffer netted the first period goal in the triumph for Suffolk, which also received three assists from freshman Chris Boyd (Milford, Mass.) as well as single helpers off the sticks of senior Zach Barron (St. Louis, Mo.), junior J. Andrew Wein (Barnegat, N.J.), sophomore Andrew Monesi (Boston, Mass.) and freshmen Josh Goryl (Rochester, Mich.) and Wes Bonnell (Flenton, Del.).

Sophomore Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, Calif.) accounted for the lone tally of the evening in the setback for the visiting Seahawks (2-19-1, 1-11 ECAC Northeast), as his marker was set up on feeds from junior Henry DeSimone (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman Chad Hollenshade (Lutherville, Md.) with 4:44 remaining in the opening stanza.

Senior Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) picked up his seventh win of the season in goal for Suffolk with 18 saves, including a penalty shot stop early in the second period, in just over 50 minutes between the pipes, while freshman Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) made six stops over the final nine plus minutes of play for the hosts.  Freshman J.C. Turgeon (Sherbrooke, Que.) made 27 saves in the setback for Salve Regina as the Rams outshot the Seahawks by a 32-25 margin for the contest.

Suffolk closes out its regular season home slate on Wednesday evening by hosting Becker in an ECAC Northeast outing at Steriti Rink beginning at 6:30 p.m., while Salve Regina heads across town on Thursday evening to take on Wentworth in an ECAC Northeast match-up at Matthews Arena that faces off at 7:30 p.m.
