Sophomore Andrew Monesi's (Boston, Mass.) goal 4:05 into overtime lifted Suffolk to a 4-3 non-league college ice hockey victory over Tufts Tuesday evening at Walter Brown Arena.
Monesi converted feeds from fellow sophomores Jason Molle (Stoneham, Mass.) and Matt Robertson (Whitman, Mass.) on the game-winner for the host Rams (5-9), who used a marker off the stick of freshman Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) 6:51 into the second stanza to snap a scoreless tie and take an early lead before junior Evan Story (Shaker Heights, Ohio) evened matters for the visiting Jumbos (4-8-1) just 1:31 later for a 1-1 draw after 40 minutes of play. Freshman Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Pa.) gave Suffolk the edge again at 2-1 4:11 into third stanza, but Tufts again knotted the score on senior Dylan Cooper's (Colorado Springs, Colo.) marker just 1:26 later. Sophomore Dan Feyock (Johnstown, Pa.) gave the Rams the lead once again with 8:33 remaining in regulation, but freshman Kyle Gallegos (Westminster, Colo.) forced overtime for the Jumbos by tallying with 2:58 to play in regulation, setting up Monesi's extra session heroics.
McGinnis added an assist to go with his goal in the triumph for Suffolk, which also received a pair of helpers off the stick of Robertson and sophomore Robbie Donahue (West Bridgewater, Mass.) as well as a single assist from sophomore Andrew Flynn (Stamford, Conn.). Cooper and Gallegos each finished with a goal and an assist in the setback for Tufts, which also received single helpers off the sticks of seniors Andy Davis (Woburn, Mass.) and Zach Diaco (Rumson, N.J.).
Freshman Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate win in goal with a 34-save effort between the pipes for Suffolk, while junior Evan Koleini (Buffalo, N.Y.) made 24 stops in the setback for Tufts as the Jumbos outshot the Rams by a 37-28 margin.
Suffolk hosts Western New England in an ECAC Northeast outing on Thursday evening at Steriti Rink in the North End beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Tufts hosts Bowdoin in a NESCAC match-up on Friday evening in Medford, Mass. beginning at 7:15 p.m.
