Hockey Falls to Bowdoin, 6-2

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- First-year players Colin Downey and Nick Wetzel scored their first collegiate goals at key times of the game to lift the Bowdoin College men's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Suffolk University in the second day of the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic on Sunday at Colby College's Alfond Rink.

Bowdoin improves to 3-0 overall  with the non-conference victory. Suffolk, which got off to a 2-0 lead in the first period, falls to 4-5.

Downey scored at 4:54 of the second period for his first goal in a Polar Bear uniform to tie the game at 2-2 and that's how it stayed heading into the third period.

Wetzel notched the game-winning goal at 2:32 of the third period for his first Bowdoin goal. The game stayed that way until the Polar Bears scored three goals in the final 3:02 of the game. Downey got his second of the contest at 16:58, Jeff Fanning also had his second goal of the game at 18:01, and Jordan Lalor closed out the scoring at 18:31.

Suffolk came out strong in the opening period, with Joe Martignetti tallying at 9:06 and Max Barron following that score with one of his own at 14:39. Barron scored on the power play when the Polar Bears were down two men. Fanning, though, got a power play goal of his own with just 1:56 left to the first intermission to put Bowdoin on the board.

Richard Nerland stopped 31 shots, including 15  saves in the final period, for Bowdoin. Jeff Rose made 20 of his 41 stops in the second period for the Rams.
