Hockey Falls to Colby, 3-1

Michael Smigelski scored the game-winning goal with 4:01 remaining in the third period to lift the Colby College men's ice hockey team to a 3-1 win over Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon at the opening game of the Bowdoin-Colby Faceoff Classic at Sidney J. Watson Arena. The Mules earn their first win of the season and stand at 1-3-0 while the Rams fall to 4-4-0.

After a scoreless first period, the Rams jumped ahead in the second period when Max Barron collected a loose puck chipped out of the Suffolk defensive zone and, despite being tripped from behind, tipped the puck past Cody McKinney at 4:37. Colby evened the score just under three minutes later when Dan Nelson took a back-door feed from Cory McGrath to even the contest at 7:12.

Suffolk dominated the early portion of the third period, but McKinney survived a flurry of shots to set up Smigelski's clincher. The game-winner came late in the period as the sophomore forward collected the puck between the circles and slipped it inside the right post for the go-ahead tally. Freshman Ben Chwick added an empty-netter with one second remaining in the third period to ice the win.

Jeff Rose stopped 25 shots in the loss for Suffolk while McKinney made 22 saves for the Mules.
