Rams Tie NCAA Mark in Victory over Salve Regina

The Suffolk University tied the NCAA Men's Hockey record scoring eight power-play goals in an 8-4 victory over Salve Regina University on Thursday evening. The Rams become the third team in NCAA history to net eight goals in a single game with the one man advantage and second NCAA Division-III Men's team to do so.

The Rams scored six unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes of play to open up their 2010-11 ECAC Northeast conference schedule and now move to 3-2 overall on the season.

Freshman Jon Stauffer (Landsdale, Penn.) finished the evening recording five points, tallying the first hat trick of his career and also added two assists on the night. Stauffer becomes the 27th player in NCAA Division-III history to score at least three goals in one night on the power-play and the first New England player to do so since the 2000-01 season.

The Rams took plenty of advantage skating with the extra man as the Seahawks were charged with 15 penalties totaling 71 minutes.

Suffolk got on the board first as freshman Max Barron (St. Louis, Mo.) netted his third goal of the season three minutes into the contest taking feeds from Stauffer and senior Paul Weisser (Longmeadow, Mass.). The Rams would go up 2-0 nine minutes later as Stauffer scored his first of three goals as he was set up by Barron and sophomore Andrew Flynn (Stamford, Conn.).

Salve would answer with two of their own in the second period as senior Brett Pimental (East Falmouth, Mass.) put in a pair of goals. Pimental netted his first goal of the season on the power-play at 9:12 and then evened the game at two with thirty-four seconds remaining in the period.

The Seahawks weren't done scoring as they tallied two more goals to start of the third period. Sophomore William Gomolinski (Western Spring, Ill.) put the Seahawks ahead 3:50 into the third as both teams were down a man on matching penalties. Less than a minute later sophomore Anthony Birbilis (Katonah, N.Y.) put Salve up 4-2 scoring his first goal of the season.

The final eleven minutes of the contest would belong to the Suffolk offense as the Seahawks got tagged for three separate game misconducts in the period. The Rams would keep their cool on the chippy Salve play registering 16 shots on goal in the final period and scoring four goals in a three minute span.

Stauffer would tally his second goal of the game at the nine minute mark taking another helper by Weisser. Freshman J.M. Leach (Reading, Mass.) evened the game at four just one minute later as sophomore Andrew Monesi (Simi Valley, Calif.) set him up on the power-play.

Andrew Flynn scored the game winner at the eleven minute mark as he was set up by the freshmen defense Stauffer and Leach for his first goal of the season.

Stauffer recorded the hat trick with 4:16 remaining, while Weisser recorded his third assist of the game on the goal.

Sophomore Jason Molle (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman David Seidell (Greenwich, Conn.) also added goals for the Rams.

Suffolk joins St. Norbert University (Division-III, 1996) and the University of Maine (Division I, 1990) as the only teams to score eight times in a single game on the power-play.

Suffolk will be back in action on Sunday as they host Johnson & Wales University in a rematch of last year's ECAC Northeast Quarterfinal playoff matchup. The puck will drop at 5:00pm at Walter Brown Arena.
