BABSON PARK, Mass. - First-year Trevor Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal at 7:46 of the third period and junior Dustyn Zener (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) earned the victory in his first collegiate start in net as the Babson College Beavers defeated visiting Suffolk University, 4-3, in a non-conference game at the Babson Skating Center on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers even their overall record at 2-2-1, while the Rams dip to 2-5-1 on the year.
Babson held a 3-2 lead after a high-scoring first period. First-year PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) gave the Beavers their first lead when he took a centering pass from senior Casey Fazekas (Montreal, Quebec) and stuffed it inside the right post for a powerplay goal at 3:18. Suffolk would then tie the game when sophomore Ryan Fitzpatrick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) found the lower right corner from the slot at 6:38, but Babson jumped back in front just nine second later when senior Chris Wood (Medford, Mass.) converted a centering feed from Donato at 6:47.
The Beavers pushed their lead to 3-1 later in the first, as
first-year Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) fired a backhand pass from
behind the net to junior Terry Woods (Duxbury, Mass.), who potted
his second of the year at 9:36. Senior Pat Welch
(Dorchester, Mass.) then pulled the Rams back to within one when he
scored off first-year Matt Robertson's (Whitman,
Mass.) rebound at 16:43, making it a 3-2 game heading into the
first intermission.
Suffolk came out firing early in the second period, swarming the
Babson net and eventually netting their third goal of the contest
when Robertson scored off a rebound of first-year Jason
Molle's (Stoneham, Mass.) shot at 4:39. Babson would then
dominate the rest of the period, firing 20 unanswered shots on net
over the final 15 minutes of the session, but Rams' junior goalie
Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) stopped all 20
bids as the two teams headed into the final period knotted at 3-3.
The Beavers took the lead for good less than eight minutes into the third, as Hines took a feed from fellow first-year James Ebzery (Sherborn, Mass.) at the top of the crease and slid it inside the right post to make it 4-3 in favor of the hosts. That would prove to be enough for Zenner, who made three saves in the final period to preserve the 4-3 Babson victory.
Making his first college start and his third appearance overall, Zenner finished with 13 saves in net for the Beavers as he earned his first career win. For Suffolk, junior Ryan Mula (Waltham, Mass.) started and made six saves before giving way to Rose, who stopped 45 of the 46 shots that he faced in just under 50 minutes of play.
