BOSTON, Mass.-- Senior Kyle Cook's (Chino Hills, Calif.) goal
with 2:21 remaining proved to be the game-winner that lifted
Suffolk to a 5-4 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Framingham
State Saturday evening at Walter Brown Arena.
Cook converted feeds from junior Pat Welch (Dorchester, Mass.) and
freshman J. Andrew Wein (Barnegat, N.J.) on the deciding tally for
Suffolk's Rams (4-10-2, 3-4-2 ECAC Northeast), who brought a 4-1
advantage into the final 20 minutes of play only to see
Framingham's Rams (0-15-3, 0-8-2 ECAC Northeast) even matters with
three tallies in a 4:06 span, including two power play markers in
38 seconds. Junior John Mortimer (Coraopolis, Pa.) had given
Framingham a 1-0 first period lead with a power play tally 6:31
into the contest, but Suffolk struck for four goals in the final
12:28 of the middle stanza, including the first career hat trick
off the stick of senior Mitch Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif.), who
evened matters 7:32 into the period. Freshman Joe Greene's
(Weymouth, Mass.) first collegiate marker gave Suffolk a 2-1 lead
at the 11:29 mark of the second, and Sabo completed his hat trick
with a shorthanded goal at 16:27 and a power play tally that came
with one second remaining
in the period for that 4-1 edge.
Sophomores John Sheehan (Stoughton, Mass.) and Trevor Johnson
(Anchorage, Ak.) struck on the two power play goals midway though
the final stanza that enabled Framingham to close to within 4-3,
and junior Jason Anderson (Arden Hills, Minn.) evened matters for
the visitors with 6:46 remaining, setting up Cook's heroics in the
closing minutes for the hosts.
Cook and Greene each had a goal and an assist in the triumph for
Suffolk, which also received a pair of assists from junior Brian
Smusz (Daleville, Va.) as well as single helpers off the sticks of
seniors Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) and John Rocchio (East
Greenwich, R.I.). Anderson and Johnson each notched a marker and
assist in the setback for Framingham State, which also received
single assists from junior Brett Casavant (Gardner, Mass.) and
sophomore Blair Nickerson (Beverly, Mass.) on the evening.
Sophomore Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) picked up the win in goal
with a 31-save effort for Suffolk, while sophomore Terence Sullivan
(Shirley, Mass.) also made 31 stops in net for Framingham State as
Suffolk's Rams held a 36-35 advantage in shots on goal for the
contests.
