Joe Sharkey begins his second season as an assistant coach on Jeff Juron’s staff in 2020-21.
Sharkey’s first season dueled as Suffolk’s last in the GNAC and it proved to be a hectic one at that with four teams tying for fourth place with identical 6-5 records. Tiebreaker tabulations put the Rams in seventh place and sent them to second seed Albertus Magnus. With the last chance at GNAC glory on the line, the Class of 2020 of All-GNAC Third-Team honoree Thomas Duffy, Jonathan Eng, George Grillakis and Cameron Powers, took the reins for the Rams, but the Falcons held off a last-minute surge to end Suffolk’s season at 14-12 overall.
Prior to Suffolk, his coaching career began as a Basketball Trainer at Ultimate Hoops, the nation’s largest network of basketball leagues and training.
As a player Sharkey, a Norwood, Massachusetts native, took his talents from Northfield Mt. Hermon to Brown, where he went on to compete for the Bears for two seasons. In the May of 2013 he suffered a career-ending injury. Although his playing days were done, he was invited to be a part of the team as a non-player while completing his degree in philosophy.
The 2016 graduate of Brown continued his education at Northeastern where he earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Leadership. At Northeastern, he belonged to The Center for the Study for Sport in Society.
Away from the court, Sharkey interned with the Boston Celtics in Community Engagement over the 2019 Summer. He most recently started a Financial Representative position at Northwestern Mutual in June 2020.
