Emerson Edges Men’s Basketball, 77-63

BOSTON – Suffolk men's basketball dropped its Boston Commons clash to Emerson, 77-63, Tuesday night at Brown & Plofker Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jake Gomez kept Suffolk in it at the beginning as the senior was responsible for all five of the blue-and-gold's points to keep the gap within one, 6-5, 2:42 into the action.  

The Lions leapt ahead by double figures, 19-9, thanks to a 13-5 spurt.

Suffolk battled back out of its own timeout as the Rams compiled an 11-2 rally to trim the margin down to one, 21-20, with 9:12 to play before halftime. That stretch featured six points from Danny Yardemian and a triple from Nick Verdile.  

Emerson outscored Suffolk 8-2 to make it a two-possession game, 29-22, at the 5:15 mark.  

The Rams managed to close out the first 20 minutes with a 6-2 run of its own to send the blue-and-gold down just a pair, 32-30.  

Gomez tied things at 32-all on the Rams' first possession.  

Things remained close in the first four minutes when Suffolk used a timeout down 40-35.  

The Lions built an 11-point gap out of the huddle, but back-to-back long balls by Keenan Robertson and Matt Draheim allowed the Rams to remain in the hunt, 48-43, at the midway point of the second stanza.  

Emerson once again took an 11-point cushion, 59-48, with 6:12 to play.  

The Rams were unable to claw their way back as every bucket the blue-and-gold poured in the Lions responded to ensue Suffolk's setback.    

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Gomez registered a team-high 14 points on a 6-for-10 showing from the field. He added eight caroms and one helper. 
  • Draheim contributed 13 points on a 2-for-5 effort from the floor, all of which came from 3-point land. He went 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and dished out one dime. 
  • Robertson had 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and one block. 
  • Yardemian tallied 12 points, three boards, one helper, and one steal. 
  • Emerson held an upperhand on the glass, 32-30. 
  • The Lions converted the Rams' 14 turnovers into 22 points.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Draheim logged a personal-best in free throws made (7) and free throws attempted (7).
