Juron, Men’s Basketball 2019-20 CBOA Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award Recipient

BOSTON – Suffolk men's basketball head coach Jeff Juron has been honored by the Collegiate Basketball Officials Association (CBOA) as the 2019-20 Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Schoenfeld, former college basketball great, who possessed a great deal of energy, impeccable honesty and a charismatic personality, was one of CBOA's founding fathers. He espoused integrity and strong character, which set him part from most men. A brief illness took Sam's life in early 1956, and, as a result, CBOA memorialized him through an award that would be annually presented to a person who exemplified the principles and characteristics so prominently displayed by Sam Schoenfeld.

Accordingly, the award is presented to the college or University which, in the judgement of the CBOA membership best exemplifies the "highest degree of sportsmanship character and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators."

This is the highest honor that CBOA annually bestows on any collegiate institution.

Prior to tip-off of Suffolk's regular-season finale, Juron accepted the honor from Executive Director of CBOA and Larry Last, the Coordinator of Officiating for New England College Basketball.

Juron, who is in his fifth season as Suffolk's head coach, is the first-ever Rams' head coach to be recognized with the prestigious award, and first coach in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), as well as Suffolk's future conference, the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), which the Rams will join in the 2020-21 season, to accept the accolade.

The 2019 GNAC Coach of the Year, brought his talents to Boston after playing for and coaching with 2009-10 Sam Schoenfeld honoree Michael Neer.

This is the third time on the blue-and-gold's bench that Juron's squad has been called out for its sportsmanship, as the Rams were back-to-back All-GNAC Sportsmanship Institutions in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, respectively.

In his short tenure on Suffolk's bench, Juron has helped the Rams to four consecutive post-season berths with the fifth post-season ticket one game away for the blue-and-gold. Under this guidance, two student-athletes have joined the coveted 1K Club – Michael Hagopian and Thomas Duffy in 2018-19. Additionally, Alex Jacovides led NCAA Division III in three-point shooting percentage last year and seven all-league recognitions highlighted by Brendan Mulson's rookie of the year status in 2016-17.
