Wheelock Outlasts Men’s Basketball, 78-73

BOSTON – In its first semester finale, the Suffolk men's basketball team put on a show for its home fans, but the Wildcats of Wheelock came out victories, 78-73, Monday night inside Regan Gymnasium.  

Jake Meister led all scorers as Suffolk's (3-6) senior put in 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field and a 50.0 percent connection rate (5-10) from beyond the arc. In his first collegiate start, Steven DiPrizio was one point shy of his first career double-double as the freshman forward provided a game-high 13 caroms and nine points. Senior Caleb Unni and rookie Michael Hagopian also scored in double figures with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

As a team Suffolk shot 50 percent (30-60) on the evening  and 40.0 percent (11-25) from three-point range, but missed its five opportunities at the foul line, going 2-of-5. The Rams outrebouned the Wildcats (3-6), 35-34.

Wheelock was paced by Anthony Williams' double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

With just under four minutes to play, the Rams and Wildcats had a two-point game on their hands as Unni swished a jump shot as the shot clock expired. Wheelock gained a seven-point edge on a 6-1 run with 1:50 to go. Meister struck 15 seconds later and DiPrizio made a power layup with under a minute to play to make it a three-point game.  

Out of a Suffolk timeout, Wheelock used time to its advantage and Williams laid the ball in to stretch the visitors' edge back to five. DiPrizio split a trip to the stripe bringing the score to 77-73, before Devin Brown went 1-for-2 at the line with 0.5 seconds remaining for the final 78-73 tally.

Suffolk returns to action after the holiday break when it crosses the Boston Common and visits Emerson Sunday, Jan. 3 at 1 p.m.
