Men's Basketball Outlast Rivier in Overtime

The Suffolk University Men's Basketball team took a 79-70 victory in overtime over the Rivier University Raiders in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Thursday evening.

Suffolk outscored the Raiders 16-7 in the extra frame to snap a three-game skid and pull even on the season at a 6-6 overall record and 3-2 mark in GNAC play.

Junior Caleb Unni (Winchester, Mass.) finished with a game-high 20 points to lead the Rams offensively on 6-for-10 shooting from the field including a 4-for-7 performance from beyond the arc in the win.

It was a tightly played contest throughout the 40 minutes of regulation when freshman David Lorden (Pepperell, Mass.) connected on a jumper with four seconds remaining to send the game into the extra frame.

Sufolk would come out firing in the overtime period as junior Jake Meister (Madison, N.J.) opened things up knocking down a three pointer 14 seconds in. Fellow classmate Curtis Casella (Saugus, Mass.) would hit another Suffolk three before Unni capped off the 8-0 Suffolk run to start the period when he sunk a pair of free-throws to space out the Rams.

Junior Branden Barboza (Riverside, R.I.) and sophomore Matt Duquette (Swampscott, Mass.) also connected on field goals in the period as Unni and Meister both went to the line sinking a pair of shots to secure the Suffolk win.

Meister finished the game with 19 points, while Casella added 18 off the bench.

Unni recorded a double-double with his team-high 20 points while leading all players with 10 rebounds. Suffolk held a significant advantage on the glass with a 49-32 edge in rebounds in the win.

Suffolk will now be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Johnson & Wales University for a 1:00pm GNAC tip-off with the Wildcats.
