Men's Basketball Suffolk 84-73 Setback In Home Opener

The Daniel Webster College Eagles improved to a 4-0 start to the 2013-14 season, their program's longest winning streak to start a season with an 84-73 victory over the Suffolk University Men's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Eric Webster (Oakland, Calif.) led all scorers with 30 points as the Eagles cruised past the Rams dropping Suffolk's record to 1-3 to start the year.

Junior Sam Nwadike (Houston, Tx.) led Suffolk with 21 points, while sophomore Caleb Unni (Winchester, Mass.) netted 17 points and finished with a team-high nine rebounds for Suffolk who drop their third straight contest.

Unni would open the game with Suffolk first four points, but a Webster layup later in the half would propel a 16-4 Eagles run that saw them take a 28-15 lead when sophomore Ryan Gauthier (Nashua, N.H.) connected on a three-pointer eleven minutes into the half. Daniel Webster would enter halftime with a 40-31 edge after twenty minutes of play.

Both teams would go back and forth for the majority of the second half until the Eagles were able to connect on three consecutive three-point field goals late in the period. Senior Eric Perez (Nashua, N.H.) would give the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 18 points when his trey made it a 76-58 game with 4:45 remaining in regulation.

Suffolk would hold a slight edge on the glass in the contest outrebounding the Eagles, 44-40 but it was Daniel Websters' long range shooting that proved to be the difference in this one. The Eagles would shoot 40.9-percent (9-for-22) as a team from beyond the arc, while the Rams were just 3 of 21.

Alongside Webster (12-for-25 from the field), three other players finished in double digits in scoring on the day for the Eagles. Perez finished the day with a double-double as he netted 13 points and led all players in rebounds with 10. Gauthier finished the afternoon scoring 15 points, while freshman Ray Farmer (Nashua, N.H.) finished the afternoon with 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the floor.

Freshman Matt Duquette (Swampscott, Mass.) recorded eight rebounds on the day for Suffolk, while chipping in with five points and sophomore Matt Powers (Westwood, Mass.) recorded double digits in scoring off the bench in his fourth straight game as he put in 10 points.

Daniel Webster will now be idle until after the Thanksgiving holiday when they host Wheelock College at 8:00pm on December 3rd. Suffolk will host UMass Boston this upcoming Tuesday at the Regan Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00pm.
