Powers Lifts Men's Basketball to GNAC Victory


Sophomore Matt Powers (Westwood, Mass.) lifted the Suffolk University Men's Basketball team to a 69-66 victory over the Rivier University Raiders on Thursday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. Powers was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point land and 8-for-10 from the field as he led all scorers with 23 points on the evening.

Trailing with 12:55 left on the clock, senior Colin Halpin (Melrose, Mass.) would goto the line connecting on a pair of free-throws to give the Rams a 45-44 lead as they would not relinquish it for the remainder of the contest.

Powers would connect on a three-pointer on the next Rams possesion to push the Suffolk lead to four points. Powers and Halpin would combine for 20 of Suffolk's 34 points in the second half, with Halpin going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the period.

Junior Tom Poitras (Bow, N.H.) paced the Raiders offense with 22 points, while junior Nick Walch (Dedham, Mass.) chipped in with 15 points.

Freshman Caleb Unni (Winchester, Mass.) scored nine points in the victory for the Rams, while he and senior Matt Pepdjonovic (Quincy, Mass.) each had seven rebounds.

The victory pushes Suffolk to a 4-6 mark in GNAC play, while Rivier drops to 4-7 in league play. The Rams hold a 6-11 overall record on the season.

The Rams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Mount Ida College Mustangs in GNAC action at the Regan Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 3:00pm.
