Men's Basketball Fall to JWU, 82-75

The Johnson & Wales University Wildcats outlasted the Suffolk University Men's Basketball team, 82-75 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Basketball action on Tuesday evening.

The Wildcats finished with three players in double digits in scoring and came out in the second half with a 22-1 run to help them improve to a 4-1 record in league play and 5-7 overall record.

Senior Chris Torres (Brockton, Mass.) led all scorers with a 24-point effort for the Rams who fall to 4-6 on the year and 2-2 in league play. Prior to the game Torres was honored as he reached the 1,00 career point milestone on Saturday in his four-year career between Suffolk and Newbury College.

Suffolk held a 45-35 edge at halftime highlighted by a 15-point first half performance by senior Colin Halpin (Melrose, Mass.).

It was sloppy for the Rams in the opening minutes of the second half as they committed nine turnovers in the first six and half minutes of the period as the Wildcats pushed themselves back up to an 11-point lead when junior Jordan Jones (Providence, R.I.) netted a jumper.

The Rams would not go quietly as they were able to even the game back up at 65-65 at the 7:12 mark when Torres scored two of his dozen in the second half. Johnson & Wales would then go on another run this time bringing them back up seven points, 72-65 when freshman Tom Garrick Jr. (Providence, R.I.) hit a shot from the left corner baseline.

Suffolk would come right back to tie the game scoring seven of their own highlighted by a monster dunk by senior Matt Pepdjonovic (Quincy, Mass.) to make it a 72-72 game. Sophomore Matt Powers (Westwood, Mass.) would hit a following free-throw to put the Rams back up with a one-point lead.

The Wildcats would grab the lead for good however as freshman Quarry Greenway (Westchester, N.Y.) scored six consecutive points for the visitors. Greenway scored 21 points in the second half for the visitors as he finished the game with a team-high 23 points.

Garrick netted 20 points in the win for the Wildcats on a 9-for-10 performance from the field, while sophomore Frank Robinson (Providence, R.I.) finished the game with 14 points.

Four players for the Rams finished the game in double digits in scoring, highlighted by Torres. Halpin finished the game with 17, while Powers and freshman Caleb Unni (Winchester, Mass.) each scored 13.

Both teams finished the game even in rebounding at 42.

Both teams will be back in action on Thursday. The Wildcats will host St. Joseph's College in GNAC action at 7:00pm. Suffolk will travel to Plymouth State for a non-conference contest at 6:00pm.
