Men's Basketball Fall Short to Norwich, 77-74

The Norwich University Cadets (3-8, 2-3 GNAC) held off the Suffolk University Men's Basketball team (5-7, 2-4 GNAC) by a 77-74 on Thursday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Sophomore Tom MacDonald (Groton, Mass.) netted 30 points on 9-for-17 shooting for the field, including five three-point field goals to pace the Cadets to their third win of the season and second in GNAC play.

Junior Chris Torres (Brockton, Mass.) led the Rams with 19 points as they fall back to a 2-4 record within league play and drop to 5-7 on the season.

The largest difference in the contest was the Cadets dominance on the glass as they out rebounded Suffolk 50-33 as a team, despite 21 rebounds by junior Matt Pepdjonovic (Quincy, Mass.) for the Rams. Norwich was able to score 16 points off second chances as they 17 offensive boards in the game.

Norwich was out infront for most of the contest as the home team was able to build a 14 point lead seven minutes into the second half on a three-pointer by junior Brandon Kuhre (Lebanon, N.H.).

However the Rams would answer back going on an 18-4 run over the next seven minutes and were able to even the score at 54 all as Pepdjonovic connected on a free throw from the line.

A layup by freshman Evan Tullar (Chelsea, Vt.) would put the Cadets back up on top as the Rams could not catch back up until the final buzzer.

Torres would make it a one possesion game at 66-64 with seven seconds remaining as he connected for three of his 14 second half points.

Sophomore Alex Myers (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) then pushed it back to a three point spread connecting on one of his two free throws.

Junior Colin Halpin (Melrose, Mass.) once again tried for late heroics as he did in Tuesday's win over Emmanuel College, however this time his shot from beyond the arc failed.

Halpin was one of four Rams to finish in double digits in scoring as long with Torres as he put in 10 points for Suffolk. Pepdjonovic finished the game with another double-double scoring 10 to go along with his 21 boards, while senior Justin Barrall (East Hampton, Conn.) scored 12 points.

Suffolk will be back on action on Saturday afternoon as they take on the Lasell College Lasers in GNAC action at 5:00pm at the Regan Gymnasium.
