Jose Guitian’s (Miami, FL) 37 points carried the Lasers to
a 98-71 win over Suffolk University in Newton, Massachusetts this
afternoon. The 16-7 Lasers (13-3 GNAC) broke away from the Rams
quickly on 55.3% shooting, to procure a 56-33 halftime lead, and
ran away with as much as a 44 point advantage before the final
buzzer. The Rams leave with a 3-19 mark this season, and a 2-13
GNAC record.
The visitors gained the initial possession, scoring right off the
bat with a jumper by Mike Gibbons (Ringwood, NJ) in the lane. The
teams traded baskets over the next three minutes before Lasell
broke the fourth tie with a Guitian trey to give the Lasers their
first lead. Uninterrupted three’s by Brad Caravoulias
(Dracut, Mass.) moments later put Lasell up 17-10 five minutes into
the half.
Suffolk attempted to keep the game close, but the Lasers momentum
was solid, holding a double-figure advantage from the 11:39 mark
on. Lasell’s defense kept the Rams in check, making nine
steals on Suffolks 15 first half turnovers. Guitian’s first
half performance of 32 points alone kept the Rams at bay, as Lasell
made their way to a 56-33 half time edge.
The second half was much of the same, as the Lasers eased ahead by
31 at the 15 minute mark after a spectacular one-handed ally-oop
slam-dunk by Guitian. Junior Sainval (Miami, FL) registered two on
a fast break lay up to give the home team their largest lead at
89-45, as Lasell profited from nine more Ram turnovers in the
second.
Gibbons recorded a team-best eighteen points for the Rams and Brian
Small ( Stoughton, Mass.) was the only other Ram notching
double-digits with 12 points. Allan Ray (Lynn, Mass.) defended the
Lasers hoop well, grabbing 11 boards in the contest.
Guitian complimented his 37 points with 13 boards, shooting 65%
from the field for the day. Caravoulias finished with 14 points and
Sainval knocked down 10. Freshman Javon Williams (Mattapan, Mass.)
had another fine outing for the Lasers today, matching seven points
with seven rebounds and adding 3 blocks and four assists. Kevin
Richard (New Orleans, LA) also had an impressive finish, dishing 12
assists and picking up five steals at the point for Lasell.
The Rams play again this Tuesday night at 6pm. Please join for Suffolk Spirit Night as Suffolk hosts Norwich in a GNAC matchup.
