BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Brian Small (Stoughton,
Mass.) posted his
second double-double in as many days to lead Suffolk University to
its
first win of the season, a 67-63 decision over the University of
Maine
Fort Kent in the consolation game of the second annual Jim
Beaudry
Classic hosted by the University of New England.
Small recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds en route to an
all-tournament
team selection to pace the Rams (1-8). Freshman Mike Gibbons (Ringwood,
N.J.) chipped in with 13 points and junior Brad Seaman (Avon,
Conn.)
scored 10 points while picking up six steals.
After a slow start by both teams, Suffolk established a 25-12 lead
late
in the first half and went into intermission with an 11-point
advantage
(29-18). Despite poor shooting from the field in the first half
(11-for-37), the Rams held their opponents to just five made field
goals
in the frame (24 percent) and forced 11 Bengal turnovers. Small had
10
points at the half, and sophomore Mike Fleming (Exeter, N.H.)
scored all
but one of his nine points before the break.
UMaine Fort Kent started strong in the second half, taking a 30-29
lead
at the 17:32 behind six points from freshman Brandon Fox
(Deptford,
N.J.). The contest went back and forth over the next 10 minutes
before
Suffolk scored 10 unanswered points to grab a 60-52 advantage with
3:49
remaining. Fort Kent could get no closer than three the rest of
the
way.
The Rams head home to take on the Monks of St. Joseph's College of Maine, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Matchup. The game starts bat 6:00 pm at Suffolk's Regan Gymnasium.
