BOSTON, MASS -- Emerson College, (13-7, 9-3 Great Northeast
Athletic Conference) used a smothering defense and a balanced
offense to defeat Suffolk University (3-15, 2-9 GNAC) 70-51 at
Emerson. The Lions held Suffolk to 29% shooting from the field,
while 10 players hit the scoring column for the home standing
winners.
Emerson broke out to a 13-4 first half lead with 13:04 remaining,
and held the Rams to four points until the 8:23 mark. The Lions
took their larges lead of the first half at 32-16 with 2:41 left on
a three-point shot by Anthony Remias (Sr., Cranberry Township,
Pa.). Four consecutive Brian Small (Sr., Stoughton,
Mass.) free throws and a traditional three-point play by Small cut
the Emerson advantage to 32-23 at the half.
The Lions started the second half with a three-point shot by Tom
Messinger (So., Florence, Mass.) just six seconds into the stanza.
That started a 13-5 Emerson run that swelled the lead to 45-28 with
15:11 to play. The Lions built a 20 point lead on a layup and
subsequent free throw by Jeremy Shannon (Jr., Lowell, Mass.).
Suffolk trimmed the lead to 13 points with 2:09 remaining, but
could pull no closer.
Shannon led all scorers with a double-double of 16 points and 10
rebounds. Nathan Firn (Fr., Waldesboro, N.C.) had 13 and played a
very strong defensive game holding Small to a Suffolk high 13
points. Bryan Rouse (Jr., East Greenwich, R.I.) added 12 for the
winners.
Emerson travels to New Haven, Conn. on Thursday for a 7:00pm game
at Albertus Magnus College. Suffolk is on the road again Thursday
evening as they travel up to Maine to take on Saint Joseph's
College
