Baseball Stopped by Salem State, 10-4

SALEM, Mass. – Suffolk baseball fell behind early and never caught up as Salem State cruised by the Rams, 10-4, in non-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A six-spot by Salem in the first frame forced Suffolk to play catch-up early.  

The Rams started to cut the deficit in the fourth. Cole Hilliard hit a one-out single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch and Mike Mullaney's base hit to center brought him in. 

An inning later, Suffolk scored again. Max Martin led off with a single to center, moved into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt overthrow by Vikings PITCHER name and came in thanks to Sebastian Lampert's single up the middle to trim the deficit to four, 6-2.  

SSU restored a five-run margin in the bottom of the sixth thanks to three base hits. 

A two-out, two-run rally by Suffolk chipped the distance down to 7-4 in the top of the eighth. With the bases full behind three walks, Max Martin barreled a two-run double to center to pull the blue-and-gold with in three. 

The Vikings answered to the Rams' offensive output in the eighth with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning to turn it into a 10-4 game.  

Suffolk had a chance to pull closer in the ninth as Sam Armbruster singled and Hilliard hit a double, but a foul out by Mullaney sealed the setback.  

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Nick Rubin took the loss has he gave up six runs on four hits and three walks in 0.2 innings of work. 
  • Ian Maude allowed one run on eight hits and two walks with two punchouts through 5.1 innings. 
  • Colin McNeal (1 BB) and John McDevitt (3 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K) came out of the pen for 1.0 inning of relief for the Rams. 
  • Brandon McMahon earned the win as he let up one unearned run on four hits with one punchout in 2.0 innings. 
  • Alex Metznik started and put together a one-run, five-hit, one-walk and one-strikeout effort over 5.0 innings. 
  • Aidan Carabello allowed two runs on one hit and three walks with two Ks in 2.0 innings. 
  • Anthony Butkevicius put together a two-hit, one-strikeout in 1.0 inning.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Max Martin went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and one run. 
  • Armbruster had three hits. 
  • Hilliard contributed two hits and two runs. 
  • Mullaney registered two hits and one RBI. 
  • Lampert logged one hit and one RBI. 
  • Jack Mihachilk added one run.

Suffolk is back in CNE action this weekend when it welcomes Western New England to East Boston this Saturday, April 26 for a twinbilll. Game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
