BOSTON – Suffolk baseball's late ninth-inning rally would not be enough to come back and claim the Beantown battle over UMass Boston as the Beacons bested the Rams, 7-4, Thursday afternoon at Monan Park.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 4 | UMass Boston 7
RECORDS: Suffolk (7-17) | UMass Boston (17-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a true pitcher's duel through four innings as Nick Arnett limited the Beacons' bats to just three hits and Suffolk was kept without a knock by UMB's Justin Silverstein for 3.0 innings and Keenan Metrick for 1.0 inning of relief.
Colin Flynn figured out Metrick in the top of the fifth as he barreled a single to left field to break up the no-hitter. Suffolk's sophomore was stranded on the bags though to keep a zero on Suffolk's side of the board.
UMB, meanwhile, put the first tally of the day up in the home half of the inning. Ryan Slack wore a pitch to get the bottom of the fifth underway. He moved over on a productive ground out by Breon Parker and scored thanks to Brandon Gaer's base hit to right center to give the Beacons' a 1-0 edge.
That gap grew to 7-0 as UMass Boston put up six runs in the bottom of the sixth behind six hits.
The score stood still until the ninth when the Rams rallied. Just like how the Beacons got their initial run back in the fifth, Max Iorio was hit by a pitch to get the inning underway. Sebastian Lampert pushed Iorio to third on a double to left center and a sac fly by Sam Armbruster gave the Rams their first run of the day. An error on Noah Greco's single to second allowed Lampert to score before Greco came in behind Cole Hilliard's base hit to center, who made his way in on Max Martin's single to the pitcher.
That scoring stretch pulled Suffolk within three with one out and runners in the corners. Alex Sorenti-Burn rolled into a double play, however, and the Rams hope of a comeback came up short.
