Fifth Inning Sends Baseball to 8-2 Game 1 Win Over Elms

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Behind an eight-run fifth-inning, Suffolk baseball bested Elms, 8-2, in game one of a twinbill to snap a six-game skid at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Thursday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Elms broke open the scoring in the top of the fourth behind a triple and base hit.  

Suffolk responded behind in the home half of the fifth frame. Max Martin worked a one-out walk and scored the game-tying run on Sam Armbruster's triple to right field. The Rams scoring did not stop there as they filled the bags with walks before Cole Hilliard wore a pitch to bring the go-ahead run in. From there, Alex Sorenti-BurnsChris Cimino and Sebastian Lampert plated two runs each to pad the margin to 8-1. Sorenti-Burns and Lampert's RBIs came on singles, while Cimino barreled a double. 

The Blazers battled one run back in the top of the sixth thanks to a couple bunts for base hits and stolen bases to trim the gap to six, 8-2.  

In the seventh, a one-out double by Andrew Ciaglo gave Elms one last hope of a comeback, but Suffolk's defense backed up Nick Arnett with a fly out to center and a 63 ground ball to lock up the victory. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Arnett compiled a two-run, five-hit, two-walk, six-strikeout, complete-game win. 
  • Colby Arnold took the loss for the Blazers. He gave up six runs on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings. 
  • Jayden Maynard allowed two runs on two hits and one walk in 0.2 innings of relief. 
  • Nason Busca tossed 1.0 inning of scoreless, hitless work with two walks allowed.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Sorenti-Burns, Max Iorio, Cimino, Lampert and Armbruster were responsible for Suffolk's five hits. 
  • Cimino had a double, while Armbrutser logged a triple. 
  • Sorenti-Burns, Cimino and Lampert brought in two runs each. 
  • Hilliard and Armbruster had one RBI apiece. 
  • Suffolk's runs were scored by Hilliard, Sorenti-Burns, Iorio, Cimino, Max Martin, Armbruster, Will Robbins and Jack Mihalchik. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Arnett recorded his first victory at Suffolk.
