AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Down four runs in the bottom of the seventh, Suffolk baseball put up three to trim the gap one, but Drew managed to preserve the 5-4 outcome in its favor in the opening outing of a twinbill at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle.
THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 4 | Drew 5
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-3) | Drew (3-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Errors allowed Suffolk to jump out to a 1-0 edge in the first inning. Colin Flynn led off and took advantage of an over throw by Drew's third baseman Jack Mocik to reach second. A long out to right by Chris Cimino pushed Flynn to third and another over throw by the Rangers' defense, this time at other infield corner, let the first run of the day come in.
Drew flipped the script in its favor with a two-run top of the fourth. Three singles and a passed ball allowed the Rangers to sneak in front, 2-1.
More scoring came in the seventh. The Rangers put up three runs on four hits to put the Rams in a 5-1 hole.
Will Robbins and Cole Hilliard barreled base hits and Alex Sorenti-Burns walked to put all the ducks in the pond. Cimino's sac fly to left brought the first run of the day before Iorio cleared the bags with a double to left center to make it a one-run game. With two outs, Max Martin got under the ball and it popped up to the mound where Connor Ruscansky gloved it to seal Suffolk's setback fate.
